What to pack for a month-long vacation with ONLY a carry-on
If you know a thing or two about travel capsule wardrobes, you're way ahead of the game! But the idea is to curate a selection of versatile pieces that can mix and match effortlessly to create multiple different outfits. Kinda like your very own portable mini closet. Think about your colours in advance and create a palette for your travels. Make sure you have neutral tones along with pops of colours to brighten things up and finish up your capsule wardrobe. Here’s what Donna packed for her month-long trip to Thailand with a 3 day layover in Vancouver during winter:
-
9 tops/tunics - A good rule of thumb is to pack more tops than bottoms as you will have a wider variety of outfits. Choose a variety of tops ranging from casual tees to dressier blouses, so you have options for different occasions. Reversible tops are great for traveling as they can create multiple outfits. Look for lightweight, wrinkle-resistant fabrics that can easily be layered or worn alone. Psst… we might be a little biased, but we think bamboo + modal fabrics are great for travel.
-
8 dresses - Try to pick versatile dresses to use for different events. For example, Donna picked a dress that can double up as a swimsuit coverup. Did you know you can turn your dress into a skirt by throwing on a top over it? Watch this video and skip to 48:32 for more details.
-
5 bottoms - Focus on neutral colours and comfortable styles that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Think classic denim jeans, versatile black leggings, and comfy shorts. You can create so many different outfits with just these 3 items.
-
2 layering pieces - Bring along lightweight layering pieces like cardigans or jackets that won’t take up too much space in your luggage. And if you have bulkier items, consider wearing them on the plane to save space.
-
18 undergarments/swimwear - Before packing everything, check to see if the place you’re staying has a laundry machine. This way, you can pack a lot less!
-
3 shoes - Choose pairs of shoes that are versatile and comfortable for walking, like sandals, sneakers, and a pair of dressier shoes for evenings out. Opt for lightweight options to save space in your luggage, or wear the bulky ones on the plane.
-
2 bags - Donna chose a crossbody bag for everyday use and a knapsack for day trips. At least one of the bags should be big enough to be used as your personal item for the plane ride. This way you can fit any extra items to free up space in your carry-on. You can even fit a smaller purse or clutch for date nights.

Packing for a layover in Vancouver
Donna had a layover in Vancouver to visit her daughter for a few days. Packing for cold weather can be a challenge since everything is so bulky. But the key is to pack versatile items that can create multiple outfits.
10 Tips for traveling with only a carry-on
-
Have a packing list: Before you start packing, make a list of essential items you'll need for your trip. This is the easiest way to make sure you’re not repeating outfits and have everything you need.
-
Choose versatile items: Select clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. Opt for neutral colours and versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down.
-
Roll your clothes: Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can help save space and minimize wrinkles. Everything Donna packed was lightweight bamboo or modal fabric as they’re great for travel since they’re wrinkle-resistant and oh so comfy. Now, Donna didn’t roll any of her items, but imagine how much more she could’ve packed if she did?!
-
Use packing cubes: Invest in packing cubes to keep your belongings organized and maximize space in your carry-on. Use different cubes for different types of items, such as clothing, accessories, and toiletries. If you’re packing for colder weather or have heavier-weight items to pack, like jeans or bulky hoodies, consider using compression bags. While other packing cubes compress your gear, compression cubes take things to another level.
-
Optimize every inch of your carry-on: Make use of any empty spaces in your shoes by tucking in socks, underwear, or accessories.
-
Choose your fabrics wisely: Choose lightweight and wrinkle-resistant fabrics like bamboo or modal. Not only will they help save space in your carry-on, but it will also make your luggage easier to carry.
-
Wear your bulky items: If you're traveling with bulky items like hoodies or boots, wear them on the plane instead of packing them in your carry-on. This will free up space in your luggage and keep you warm during your flight.
-
Limit toiletries: Minimize the number of toiletries you pack by opting for travel-sized containers or purchasing items at your destination. Remember that most hotels provide basic toiletries, so you may not need to bring everything with you.
-
Pack multi-purpose items: Look for items that serve multiple purposes to save space in your carry-on. Check out this video where we show you 9 different ways of styling a button-up!
-
Check airline restrictions: Check the size and weight restrictions for carry-on luggage with your airline before you pack. Make sure your carry-on meets the requirements to avoid any issues at the airport.
Packing for a month-long trip with just a carry-on may seem daunting, but with the right approach and smart packing strategies, it's totally achievable! It just takes a little planning.
We hope Donna was able to inspire you all to pack for a long trip in a carry-on like a pro. Remember, it's all about embracing versatility, getting creative, and keeping it light.
